Mom & Dad Visit

Mom & Dad Visit

On Cinco de Mayo my parents flew into Germany for my mom’s 2nd, and my dad’s FIRST visit (to us) in Deutschland! Michael and I were SO excited to host them, show off a little German spring weather, and spend some good one on one time with my parents, something we have not been able to do in a while. They got in early, grabbed their rental car (SUCH A BLESSING!!!!) and arrived at our home in Bosenbach before noon! Michael was on a mission that day- so it was just Roo and me on the welcome committee. We quickly whipped up some breakfast and dad settled into the couch for a little snooze while Mom and I took a walk up the trail- when the sun comes out, you have to spring into action to enjoy it, because moments later it just might disappear. After our walk Mom crashed for a bit while Dad and I talked and caught up. Then we all took a lap around the village. I love when something you do almost every day takes on a whole new light when seen through someone else’s eyes. Mom is taking pictures of all the unique flowers we pass- laughing at the array of crazy different front doors. Dad is intrigued by the architecture (or lack thereof) discussing different building materials used here- inspecting a house under construction. Then we all stop to appreciate some of the older buildings- with markers over their doorways dating back to the 1800’s. It is amazing how much history can be held in one small, seemingly insignificant village in Germany. Buildings this old are much more rare stateside, and it feels odd that they are a dime a dozen over here. After our walk through history, us 3 Americans headed back to my German house to prepare our Mexican Cinco de Mayo dinner! We sipped homemade (as in dad hand-squeezed about 15 limes) margaritas, snacked on my homemade salsa (the recipe came from my bible study book!) and whipped up carne asada tacos with all the fixin’s! Michael made it home from his mission just in time for some appetizers and it was so good to finally all be together to relax and catch up! That night we fired up the fire pit to complete the ultimate day one of visiting and relaxing!

Saturday we slept in (Jet lag is no joke!) and headed to base to run some errands and show mom and dad around Michael’s squadron. Then we headed to our good friends’ house to celebrate William’s 3rd birthday! It was a fun afternoon of watching the kids run around and play- I stole the baby (little Alexis) and snuggled her the whole time. We left early for a meeting at our church- Dad’s company is hoping to help Frontline with some designs to renovate and rework some of the interior church spaces to better fit our needs. Very exciting! Saturday night we took Mom and Dad to our favorite restaurant in K-Town: Mythos, an authentic Greek restaurant!

Sunday we enjoyed a nice service at Frontline Community Church before heading to lunch at our favorite restaurant in Ramstein: See Woog! Their pizza and salads are divine. Tom was out of town, but Cody joined us! Brittney and William (our other usual after-church lunch crew) were also out of town for William’s birthday. After church we just relaxed and enjoyed the rest of our day 😊

Monday morning we took a hike up our trail right behind our house- and went all the way to these beautiful yellow canola fields! It was spectacular. Even thought it was cloudy and chilly, you can’t beat the view. That night I taught dance and Mom and Dad had a relaxing night at the house with Michael.

Tuesday morning I had my last bible study session, but afterwards we headed to Nanstein Castle in Landstuhl to explore a little and grab lunch. The weather was absolutely perfect with the sun peeking through the clouds and we had the most wonderful time exploring the castle ruins. This was my 3rd time trying to tour the castle (the other 2 attempts were unsuccessful) so I was thrilled we even made it in- little did I know how interesting it would actually be! After the castle tour we hopped over to the restaurant up there with the most amazing view for Schnitzel and beer. Dad LOVED it! (As I knew he would) The remainder of our trip was spent visiting Dachau & the Netherlands- check out those posts to read more!
