My Top 5 Non-Toxic Cleaning Supplies

My Top 5 Non-Toxic Cleaning Supplies

Finding non-toxic cleaning supplies that actually WORK can be so hard! Switching from the Lysol, Softscrub, Dial hand soap and Windex of my childhood took some work. So I am excited to share a few of my favs today and hopefully make your search a little bit easier. My go-to resource for understanding if these types of products are safe is the EWG. (Either their Skin Deep database or their Guide to Healthy Cleaning search engine.) I start there to find products that are clean enough to try, then I try until I find something I love. I have been using all of these for a few years now and they are tried and true!

1.     Branch Basics- I cannot rave enough about these products! Some girlfriends got me the starter kit as a housewarming gift and I have loved using them ever since. They are plant and mineral based, fragrance free and very well rated on the EWG.

When you order you get the concentrate and you use varying amounts of that plus water (that’s IT) to make the different cleaners (all purpose, bathroom, windows, hand soap, and laundry detergent) I primarily use the spray cleaners, the foaming hand wash is in the boys bathroom because I think that is easier for them. The Laundry detergent uses a good bit of the concentrate and I broke down the price per load and it was a good deal more expensive than the 365 Brand powder I use, so I do not use that often, but when I did I will say, it cleaned the laundry VERY well. For just refilling the spray bottles and hand soap the concentrate lasts me a good 6 months to a year! I think my favorite thing about this set of cleaning supplies is it works for so many different things! The Oxygen Boost is INCREDIBLE and get’s out any stains.

*To stain treat: spray with bathroom cleaner or concentrate, sprinkle oxygen boost on top, spray again until it is bubbling and “activated.” Let sit (for a while- but not till it totally dries or you will need to spray again) and then agitate with washcloth or light brush until stain is gone. Works on clothes, shoes, counters, floors… everything! I had a stain on my bathroom counter that BLEACH didn’t even budge. This out it completely out.

EWG RATING: Concentrate (A) + Oxygen Boost (VERIFIED)

2.     Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover- unfortunately it is not listed on the EWG but it is advertised at water-based, non-toxic and safe for kids and pets. That said, it could be total green-washing. But I can vouch for the fact that this stuff WORKS. Just spray, agitate and either soak up or let dry and BAM- stains are GONE. I use it on things that are not carpet like upholstery, curtains etc.

EWG Rating: N/A :(

3.     Everyone Hand Soap: it works, it smells great (love the lavender coconut!), its super clean (EWG Verified), and bonus: it comes in a giant jug so I can refill all my glass hand soap containers which is better for the environment. I use these glass hand soap containers from Amazon and have had them for years with no issues. There is a lot of greenwashing with hand soaps (Think Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day- rated 5 on EWG) so I love that I have found a brand I can really trust.

EWG Rating: VERIFIED

4.     ECOVER Zero Dish Soap: I am particularly proud of this one because finding a non-toxic dish soap (EWG Rating: A) that also does the job and cuts grease is REALLY difficult. I have tried them ALL and this one is by far one of the best. You can wash your dishes with Branch Basics but I like a little grip to my hand and dish soap and this really fits the bill. We keep this in our countertop pump in the kitchen and I love that it’s so gentle I can use on our hands but it does a great job on the dishes too.

EWG Rating: A

5.     Hello Bello Surface Wipes: sometimes, you just need a surface wipe. The only things I don’t love about them is that by nature they are wipes which is worse for the environment (but they are plant based!) and they are rated a B on EWG. That said, if you look deeper into the rating, none of the ingredients are cancer or developmental/reproductive toxicity risks. The risks are mostly allergen or environmental which I am a bit less concerned with. I do love that the citrus scent is from citrus oil and not synthetic fragrance. They hold up well, aren’t too slippery and don’t leave streaks behind. We buy ours with our diaper bundles (love their diapers and baby shampoo/body wash!) but you can purchase on Amazon.

EWG Rating: B

*Another surface wipe I really like and actually is rated an A on the EWG are the Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Wipes. You have to be careful with Seventh Generation because not all their products are clean, but this one is!

I hope that is helpful and saves you some time next time you are in the market for a new cleaning supply that won’t harm you or your family’s health. I would love to hear from you, drop in the comments your favorite CLEAN cleaning supplies or let me know if you give one of these a try!
