Fizzy Volcano Science Experiment

Fizzy Volcano Science Experiment

I love a good, cheap activity I can do home with the kids. We embarked on a fun little experiment that turned into almost an hour of sensory play! The ingredients are kid safe, cheap (likely in your cupboards right now) and it’s quick and easy to set up.

SUPPLIES:

  • Towel

  • Cookie Sheet or Tray

  • Small glass (or plastic) bottles, vases, or other interesting vessels of different shapes

  • Vinegar

  • Baking Soda

  • Dish Soap

  • Food Coloring (I recommend plant based like these)

  • Spoon

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Set out a large cookie sheet or tray with a towel underneath to catch any spills

  2. Set out jars (we started with 3 which I think it plenty)

  3. Fill each jar about halfway with vinegar

  4. Put a good squirt of dish soap in each

  5. Add a few drops of food coloring and stir (we started with red, yellow and blue so we could mix colors and explore how to make green, purple and orange)

  6. Add a teaspoon of baking soda at a time (giving a quick stir with the spoon or swirl the bottle to get the ingredients to mix will make it go a lot further.)

  7. Watch as the vinegar and baking soda have a reaction releasing carbon dioxide making tons of fizzing bubbles! The dish soap makes the bubbly foam a thicket consistency which is really fun.

  8. Let your kiddos explore! If you spoon more baking soda in it will continue to react with whatever vinegar is left in the bottle.

Leave a comment and let me know once you have given it a try! I hope you have as much fun with it as we did!
